Moot Hall Council Chamber

Heritage Open Day: Recently refurbished (2022), the Moot Hall is still used for its original purpose. Official Town Council Business is conducted in the Council Chamber, just as in centuries past. Downstairs now hosts the Tourist Information Centre and Exhibition Room. Discover Moot Hall Council Chamber this Heritage Open Days. Built in the market place in 1596, it served as a civic centre to house Appleby Corporation (now the Town Council), with additional space for rent. There have been many alterations to the structure, but - almost uniquely among only several such buildings in England - the council chamber is still used for its original purpose. Appleby’s copy of Foxe’s ‘Book of Martyrs’ published in 1631-32 will be on display in the Moot Hall Exhibition Centre and local historian Barry McKay will be there on Sunday from 11am-1pm to provide more in-depth knowledge about the volumes.
Sat 14 Sep:1000-1500; Sun 15 Sep:1000-1500; Free Entry.
