St George's Church, Chorley

Heritage Open Day: Visitors will see an early 'Waterloo' or 'Commissioners' Church', an imposing example of architect Thomas Rickman's work, dating from 1825. They can view the newly restored reredos and participate in bellringing or playing the organ. The Church (consecrated 1825) is noteworthy as an early example of a large Waterloo Church, for the hammer-beam roof by Rickman and Stephen Adam's internal west window (1891). The focus will be on 'Restoring the Reredos'. For the first time in 65 years, the reredos behind the curtain is visible and the restored panels will be available for viewing. Talks will explain the historical context behind the great changes of 1891 when the chancel and reredos were created and the recent restoration process.
