Castle Hill Halton
Heritage Open Day: Site of Norman Motte and Bailey Castle - Open for first time in advance of access works to make the site open to the public.
Short display of proposed access improvement works. The monument at Castle Hill consists of a truncated motte situated at the end of a promontory overlooking the River Lune with a well defined bailey to the NW of the motte. One of a chain of Norman fortifications along the Lune valley from Lancaster up to Sedburgh and Tebay.
The site has been in the ownership of the parish council since the 1920s and has been used as rough grazing. Recent funding raised by the local heritage group will enable access to the site to be improved and the site to be opened to the public in spring 2025. Come along and get a preview of the site before work starts.
