Heritage Open Day: Opened in 1700, Gateacre Chapel is one of the oldest buildings in Gateacre Village. Come and enjoy our peaceful and welcoming sanctuary. Gateacre Chapel was built for a community of non-conformists established in 1690. Their eighteenth-century building survives, including the original pulpit, from which the celebrated William Shepherd, friend of William Roscoe and opponent of the slave trade preached. His memorial is on the chapel wall. The chapel was substantially reordered in the nineteenth century and the pews and communion table date from this period. There is a beautiful stained glass window donated by Henry Tate (founder of the Tate Gallery).
