Church of Our Lady of Reconciliation de la Salette
Heritage Open Day: A complete revolution in church building - The Tablet , 1860. See it for yourself. The parish was founded by the Belgian Fr. Vanderspitte in 1854 and the present Grade II church opened in 1860 . It was the result of close collaboration between Edward Welby Pugin and the Bishop of Liverpool , Alexander Goss , who took such a personal interest in the building that his coat of arms is carved in stone above the South door. Pugin's design is important because it represents his first attempt at a semi-circular apsidal design , its large internal space providing almost uninterrupted visibility for 1,000 worshippers including many Irish immigrants and , later , the Lithuanian community who donated the Side Altar of Our Lady of Wilna in 1893.
