Newton Common Lock Keeper’s Cottage: A History

Heritage Open Day: Join members of the Sankey Canal Restoration Society for a free book launch, discovering the history of the cottage and its recent excavation. Earlier this year, the Sankey Canal Restoration Society excavated the Newton Common Lock Keeper’s cottage on the Sankey Canal, revealing a new layer of history for this excellent example of Canal architecture. The cottage has a rich history, being featured in engravings from the early 19th century, which show the magnificent Sankey Viaduct. The cottage was demolished in the early 1970s, and had also been excavated in 2002.

This event sees the launch of a new book that presents not only the findings from the recent excavation, but the history of this fascinating cottage.
