Workaid: The Old Boot Factory
Heritage Open Day: Guided tour of a charity that refurbishes, exports and distributes tools, equipment and machinery and sewing machines to Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania. Unwanted tools and equipment are refurbished by a team of volunteers at Workaid. The refurbished tools are then sent to vocational training projects where they help young people learn trade skills and start their own businesses. Workaid was founded in 1986 and since then it has sent in access of 29,000 sewing and knitting machines and 17,000 tool kits to 3800 vocational training projects that have helped change the lives of an estimated 190,000 people.
Workaid is located in the former Boot Factory, an atmospheric Victorian factory building.
