Heritage Open Day: Newtimber church is a local parish church with a significant place in global history; with links to the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica, a prominent abolitionist, it also offers a resting place for the souls of the SS Mendi disaster of 1917. Across South Africa, National Heritage Day is celebrated on 24th September during which they recognise and celebrate their roots and their rich diverse cultural heritage, and St John the Evangelist at Newtimber is inextricably connected to this day of remembrance and celebration. 670 soldiers from the Eastern Cape were drowned in the sinking of SS Mendi in 1917. A memorial stone was laid at Newtimber church to commemorate their chief Henry Bokleni Ngamase, who led eligible warriors from his tribe to serve the British crown.
