Urgent news from Sarajevo...
Heritage Open Day: 14 June 1914 stop
Dieppe to Holywell stop
Urgent news from Sarajevo stop… Have you wondered about the small building immediately on the right as you enter the Italian Gardens? Could it have been a café, or perhaps a public loo? It turns out to have been something rather more interesting...
Come and find out about the Dieppe-Holywell underwater telegraph cable, one of the first to reach the UK! It became part of a network of cables run by the London-Paris telegraph service. In 1922 the cable terminal was removed from the beach and rehoused in a specially designed building in the newly landscaped Italian Gardens. It carried on transmitting until 1940 when the decision was made to sever the cable as it presented a risk to national security!
Could the message that led to the outbreak of the First World War have been routed via Holywell on its way to London? Join us to find out more!
