Winchelsea Wesley Methodist Chapel

Heritage Open Day: The Wesleyan Society was formed in Winchelsea in 1774 and this 'Preaching House' was built in 1785. John Wesley preached in the Chapel in 1789 and the pulpit remains in the Chapel. John Wesley visited Winchelsea on several occasions and was supportive of the local community. As well as preaching in the 'Preaching House' he also preached his final sermon under the Wesley Tree that is just around the corned from the chapel. The original tree fell in 1927 and the present tree is taken from a sapling and planted in 1931. The Chapel is run by a Management Committee who plan events every few weeks. These vary from Harvest and Christmas celebrations to Open Days to link with the open gardens in the town. Within the Chapel there is memorabilia from the days of Wesley, and of Methodism, as well as copies of the history of the Chapel. The Chapel is supported by 'Friends' and application forms may be found in the Chapel or on the website.
