A Glorious Name: how the roads, barracks and buildings of military Aldershot got their names

Heritage Open Day: The names of the roads and buildings of Aldershot garrison are a roll-call of British military history and of the history of the Camp. This illustrated talk looks at meanings behind these names and how they came to be used in the Aldershot garrison. Great battles, historical events and military personalities are all commemorated by the names of Aldershot Military Town's roads, barracks and buildings. Some names are still well-known today, while others have been largely forgotten over the years. There are puzzles as well, for example why does Hospital Hill not lead to the hospital, and why is Redvers Buller Road nowhere near Buller Barracks? Local historian Paul Vickers tells the stories of how the names were chosen, the different patterns and systems applied during various periods of the building and re-building of the Camp, and how even the names being used in current re-development sites reflect the proud and unique military heritage of Aldershot.
