Bastion Days: explore the defences

Heritage Open Day: Bastion No.1 is a scheduled monument, a rare surviving section of the Gosport Defence Lines. This self-led tour enables you to explore the site, understand its history, and talk to the 'Friends' to learn more... This bastion is part of the embankments that surround the town, locally known as Vicars Bank or Tragedy Bank. If you wonder why 'Tragedy Bank', the Friends will enlighten you. The original gun emplacements, terreplein, rampart, moat, and brick caponier covered way can be seen. Also, some of the magazine and shell stores that are built into the embankment will be open.

Come and hear some stories of its history and latest research. Visit the Community Garden and look out for wildlife as you enjoy walking over this recently preserved part of Gosport's Defence Lines.
