200 years to the day

Heritage Open Day: On the 8th September 1824 the first bridge from Langstone to the island was opened. Almost immediately Hayling Island changed forever. On the afternoon of the bicentennial, exactly 200 years after that first link stopped muddy feet across the Wadeway or cadging a lift in a boat with a fisherman heading north, Hayling Island Community Centre will be the host for the telling of the tale of why the Bridge came about, the reasons for the Act of Parliament necessary for its construction, how it was built and eventually the replacement that you drive, bus or walk over whenever you depart or return to our island home.
Sun 8 Sep:15:00; Free Entry.
