Hyde900: Display of Copy of Medieval Liber Vitae of New Minster and Hyde Abbey
Heritage Open Day: Believed to date from 1031, the Liber Vitae (the 'Book of Life') of New Minster and Hyde Abbey recorded the daily life of the New Minster and (after 1110) of Hyde Abbey. We have on display a copy of the Liber Vitae, once in use in Hyde Abbey. (No need to book. Just call into St Bartholomew's Church, Hyde to see it). The Liber Vitae is a fascinating medieval register documenting the daily life of the monastery. It also records the names of the monks who joined the monastery and of visitors and pilgrims visiting the New Minster (and later Hyde Abbey) on their pilgrimage to pay homage to St Swithun in Winchester Cathedral.
On one page of the book is a significant contemporary picture featuring both King Cnut and his second wife Queen Emma of Normandy.
