About this Event
St. Martin's Church, Great Mongeham
Heritage Open Day: This church tucked away from the main road is a 'tour de force' of thirteenth century architecture, north and south aisles with narrow pillars create a large space for worship. It has been restored many times, the 19th Century restoration of William Butterworth is what we see inside today.
There is a memorial on the tower to Robert Maynard the man who captured Blackbeard the pirate in Carolina. A large traditional churchyard with the Rectory next doors, a fine Georgian building.
There is a fine lych gate in the south eastern corner.
