A Day in Paradise

Heritage Open Day: Within the Ramsgate Historic Quarter is the town's oldest street Paradise which was home to retired sea captains in the early 18th century. Some of the houses will be open to the public accompanied by sea shanties and characters in costume. Paradise is situated within the Ramsgate Historic Quarter, which was developed in the 17th and 18th centuries and occupied by sea captains and merchants engaged at one of Kent's busiest ports. The proceeds of international trade with Norway, Russia and New England resulted in a high standard of architecture including Dutch gabled rows and grand sea captain's mansions. In the days before steam power the Spread Eagle coaching inn brought in the first tourists from the capital. Visitors will be invited to walk around the historic quarter area and visit some of the houses in Paradise. In the evening there will be live traditional folk music with characters in costume.
