Peter Cushing - Gentleman of Horror
Heritage Open Day: Peter and Helen Cushing purchased a cottage by the sea in 1959. They called Whitstable The Village and recuperated here from their frenetic lives on stage and in film and television. Residents tell many complimentary stories about the Cushings. Peter Cushing was able to create absolutely credible characters whether on stage, screen or television. Helen had been born in St Petersburg Russia and was fluent in Russian, German, English and French and was also an actress having worked in America and in ENSA during the second world war. Peter's acting career started slowly, but he was making a name for himself in Hollywood until he returned to England after WW2 started and he also joined ENSA, met Helen and they fell in love.
