Caffé Piccolo
Heritage Open Day: Explore Caffé Piccolo, an independent family run restaurant on the site of a 17th century or earlier building. The age of the building is uncertain. Nos 83 and 84 are Grade II Listed and are under one roof containing the remains of a timber framed building.
Records start in 1780 and from then until the 20th century No. 84 was let to a variety of tenants - in the 19th century there was a cooper here selling tubs, barrels, baskets and bowls.
In 1929 a Tudor fireplace was revealed during building work and from the 1930s to the 1970s it was The Old Mitre tea rooms, taking its name from the 18th century alehouse at No. 83 (now KallKwik).
It opened as Caffé Piccolo in 1995 and re-opened in 2022 after a major fire.
