Heritage Open Day: Self-guided tours of grade II listed 19th Century Victorian gothic chapel and grounds, converted into The New School in 1992 and now Exeter Pre-Prep School. Exhibition of school archives in the hall. Originally built as the chapel for Exminster Hospital, formerly Devon County Lunatic Asyulm, which was located at the end of The Avenue. The architect was Joseph Neale of Exeter, and the chapel was finished in 1875. It was built using Heavitree red brecchia stone and Bathstone and has steeply pitched slate roofs in the French Gothic style. The building was Grade II listed in 1985 as “a fine example of a complete chapel of its date with high-quality fittings and notable carvingsâ€.
