Old Forde House
Heritage Open Day: Newton Abbot and District Civic Society are delighted to invite you to an open day at the Grade I listed Old Forde House.
Opened for us by Teignbridge District Council the building is the jewel in the crown of Newton Abbot. Built from 1545 to 1550, this rare Jacobean building was built for John Gaverock and passed through a series of families including a chapter under the Courtenays, from 1762 into the 1800s. It has been extended over time. This is a rare chance to see inside this family home steeped in history, with its sweeping lawns and former lake areas. Owned by the district council since 1978 and restored in 1980, it is a striking sight on the way into our ancient market town. It is also famous for a visit in 1625 by King Charles I.
