Heritage Open Day: Weymouth's Regency Church. Discover Weymouth’s Regency church, a gem hidden in plain sight in the town centre. It’s a Grade I listed building. There has been a church here since medieval times - initially a chapel, later becoming the parish church of Melcombe Regis. King George III was a regular attender in the old building during his visits to Weymouth. His granddaughter, Princess Charlotte, also attended the old church during her visits and made a sizable donation towards the construction of today’s building, which was opened in 1817. Come along to admire this historic church, which includes a painting of the Last Supper by Sir James Thornhill, dating from the 1720s.
There will be tours, talks, a historical display and opportunities to ask questions about life in Regency Weymouth. Refreshments will be available.
