Newent Market House Museum Special Opening Days
Heritage Open Day: Built in 1668, Newent’s black and white Market House has been the centre of the town for over 300 years. It houses a display of local history and a large collection of local artefacts plus music history featuring locals Joe Meek and Rutland Boughton. Built in 1668, Newent’s black and white Market House has been the centre of the town for over 300 years. For the past 25 it has housed a display of local history and a sizeable collection of artefacts found locally – bronze age, Roman, and more recent. We also have a small collection of local history books which attract visitors who are researching family history. In a separate small room there is a display of more recent music history: Joe Meek, early electronic music-maker was born in Newent, and mid-20th century choral and classical music composer Rutland Boughton lived nearby.
