Church of Our Lady and St Alphege, Bath

Heritage Open Day: The church was built in 1929 and designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, one of Britain's greatest 20th-century architects, inspired by basilicas in Rome. Scott regarded it as his 'little gem'. It is grade 2* listed. Admirers of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's work (such as Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea Power Station, the red telephone-box) will see his characteristic combination of traditonal design (in this the early Christian basilica), modern techniques (such as the unique ruboleum floor with Cosmatesque 12-13th-century patterns), and an arts-and-crafts attention to detail (such as ironwork and wood). The church has been restored in preparation for its centenary in 2029. The guide, Dr Giles Mercer, will place the church in the context of Scott's architecture as a whole, as well as in the context of Bath's social and economic development. It is an oasis of serenity and peace in the western part of Bath, which expanded in the later 19th century. Gro
