Wells City Archives, Courts and Conduits
Heritage Open Day: A pop-up display including original items from the City Archives collection. See how the Town Hall and Market Place were used as gathering places through our maps, court records and a 15th century charter. A pop up exhibition featuring three displays with key items from the Wells City Archives collection. The first will show how Bishop Beckington built the Market Place conduit to carry water into the city in 1451, providing a focal point in the city that would frequently be used as a meeting place. The second will show case records from the Petty Sessions Court held in Wells during the 19th Century as people gathered to resolve their differences. Finally the third will show a unique map of the city, produced in 1860, originally drawn as a sewerage survey but also providing a fascinating snapshot of Wells in the Victorian Era.
