About this Event
Alcester Baptist Chapel and Meeting House
Heritage Open Day: The Baptist community in Alcester first met in 1640, one of the earliest Baptist meetings in the country. Take a walk around the original meeting house from 1735, and the later chapel dating from 1860. You can also visit the old burial ground. The earliest meetings were held in a private house, which still exists. The first chapel was used for worship until 1860 but then became the Sunday school room. There was a great demand for education at that time. The school was so successful that an extension had to be built. The original church record book is still in existence and gives an insight into the affairs of the church and congregation, and the punishments handed out to transgressors! There is a poster display explaining the history of the Baptist community in. Alcester. You can also learn about the present day activities of the Church. As you walk around the buildings you will get a sense of all the generations that have worshipped and been educated in this place.
