Bishop Burton - the Altisidora Inn

Heritage Open Day: The Altisidora Inn, named for a very famous racehorse in the beautiful East Riding village of Bishop Burton, welcomes you. The Altisidora is a whitewashed country inn set in a delightful 15th century collection of buildings, and as the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's conservation area report states, the inn is ‘pivotal’ in views of the village. Plenty of parking and disabled access.

Its puzzling name is from a famous Yorkshire chestnut mare called Altisidora, sired by Eclipse, bred and owned by Richard Watt, the lord of Bishop Burton. Altisidora won the classic race St Leger at Doncaster in 1813 after no less than 10 false starts. It was alleged all the villagers had their shirts on her.
