TALK 5: The Hanseatic League

Heritage Open Day: The Hanseatic League: roots, heritage and futures by Rob Bell. The Hanseatic League, formed in 1350, was a medieval commercial and defensive network of member states. It was a network of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe which developed into a powerful association of cities. These medieval ‘merchant guilds’ were known as Hanses with Lübeck on the Baltic Sea their Headquarters. For more than 400 years, the Hanseatic League shaped the economy, trade and politics of northern Europe.
