TALK 11: The Final Days of Arthur Wilson

Heritage Open Day: Arthur Wilson was one of Hull’s wealthiest, philanthropic and admired, Victorian businessmen. This talk, by Dennis Chapman, covers his eventful lifetime, during which he built up his family’s shipping business in the City - eventually growing into the world famous, Hull-based, Ellermans Wilson Line. Arthur’s wealth had enabled him to build one of the area’s finest mansions at Anlaby - Tranby Croft - with it surviving to the present day, as a splendid example of Victorian architecture. It has a fascinating history of its own with the Wilson family visitors having included Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales (around whom the infamous Baccarat betting scandal centred).
