Heritage Open Day: With Local Historian & Friend of Linthorpe Cemetery & Nature Reserve Ian Stubbs we will journey across the globe using the headstones of people resting in the cemetery. Japan to Russia, Germany to Africa the battlefields of two world wars & oceans. The cemetery which dates back to the 17th century for original burials of the Quakers, was opened as a municipal resting place in 1869. With the town of Middlesbrough being a major port since the 1830s there are ship's Captains, pilots and sailors lost at sea. There are over two hundred war casualties commemorated from conflicts ranging from the Crimean War to the American Civil War and the South African or Boer Wars to the two recent world wars.
