Britain's What's On Event Guide
St Columba's York URC
Heritage Open Day: Visit this magnificent church, built to hold 700 people in the late 1800s. The three stained glass windows overlooking the balcony and the 1908 Lewis Organ are only two of its notable features. There is a short treasure hunt for children. The Scots Greys, stationed at Fulford barracks, used to march to St Columba's Presbyterian Church (as it was then known) led by officers mounted on grey horses; during the service the horses would be tethered to the railings outside. The Regiment even provided a grey horse for the minister to ride!! St Columba's has undergone some changes since then; for example, the church tower no longer exists. Drawings of the original building are on display inside.
The church retains its large balcony, pews and a Lewis organ fully restored in the 2000s. The three large pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows are best viewed from the front of the church.
Coffee and cake are on offer at the front of the church.
