St Andrew's Church, Aldborough, Nr. Boroughbridge

Heritage Open Day: As part of the Yorkshire Historic Churches Open Day, St Andrew's is opening its doors to visitors. Set in the Roman Forum of Isurium Brigantum, the church has a fascinating history. Let our guides show you around, then enjoy some refreshments. St. Andrew’s, founded in the 14th century, is a Grade I listed church built on the site of the Roman forum of Isurium Brigantum and historically the mother church of a very large parish. In Roman times Isurium Brigantum was a major trading and administrative regional capital providing supplies north to Hadrian’s Wall. A statue of Mercury in the church indicates continuous worship on the site since pre-Christian times. The church is the third on its site and often described as ‘beautiful and peaceful’. It is of ‘exceptional’ heritage value; having amongst other features, ancient glass, a monumental brass of Sir William de Aldeburgh and the longest church clock pendulum in the country.
