Zion Graveyard Attercliffe

Heritage Open Day: Visit the forgotten graveyard, burial place of Victorian anti-slavery campaigner Mary Ann Rawson. Abandoned for twenty years it was saved from development by volunteers. Join us for a fascinating talk about the history of the Zion Chapel Community. Volunteers from Friends of Zion Graveyard Attercliffe will be giving hourly talks about the history of this hidden gem, the remarkable people who founded this chapel and the networks they created. With a story that dates back to 1661 this tiny space holds a big history. During the past seven years, the site has been transformed from an overgrown wasteland to a wildlife sanctuary, and every grave uncovered has been researched, revealing a fascinating social history, including the rise and fall of The Sheffield Smelting Company, which has just gone into liquidation after 263 years.
