Routes and Ways - Fairbank's Sheffield
Heritage Open Day: Drop in to Sheffield Archives for a lunchtime look at some of Sheffield's oldest archive maps with Dr James Shaw and have a tour of our strongroom which has has over 800 years of Sheffield History. The Fairbank family of Sheffield worked as surveyors from 1736 to 1848. They mapped the growth of Sheffield from a small town to a large industrial city, leaving behind some 4,600 hand-drawn plans covering Sheffield and beyond. Drop in for a look at some of these very early plans. Dr James Shaw of Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at Sheffield University's History will be on hand with Sally Rodgers, Archives Engagement Officer to answer questions. This is also an opportunity to have a guided tour of our strongroom which is not open to the public.
