Britain's What's On Event Guide
St Peter's Church, Hartshead with Hightown
Heritage Open Day: There will be a chance to see old registers and local memorabilia in the wonderful setting of St Peter's Church, Hartshead. This is a Bronte Church, where Rev'd Patrick served as curate in charge. There are links with the Luddites too and Robin Hood. St Peter's Church is thought to be around 1000 years old. The two Norman Arches date to just under 1000 years ago. The Saxon tower is said to make the church the shortest, highest church in England. Within the large churchyard, with an amazing view, stands an old yew tree from which Robin Hood is said to have taken his final bow.
The illegally interred remains of some of the Luddites are also said to have been buried in the consecrated church grounds.
