Spen Valley Heritage Waymarkers

Heritage Open Day: MP Kim Leadbeater will unveil 3 old waymarkers restored & repaired by Spen Valley Civic Society (SVCS), at three local sites, and we'll tell you about their history. Hopefully you may then be able to spot others in a sorry state around Yorkshire! Join Spen Valley's Civic Society as our MP reveals 3 heritage waymarkers we've restored. We start with an historic fingerpost sign on high ground, on an ancient route. Originally a Roman road, then a packhorse way, in 1740 it became the turnpike (toll road) from Wakefield to Halifax. One of the sign's fingers points to Huddersfield via the aptly-named Windybank Lane, where you can find Spen Valley's oldest Scheduled Monument, the stone base of Walton Cross, probably a Saxon waymarker and preaching cross.
