St Paul’s

Heritage Open Day: A Victorian town centre church with a wow factor. Built for the working man in Eastthorpe. This is the last chance to see the beautiful stained glass windows and unique exhibition tower clock. The church will close permanently on 8 September. The Church Foundation stone was laid on 25 January 1881 by Mr R. Theodore Ingham of Blake Hall. Amazingly, the whole building was completed in just ten months. The church was consecrated on 1 November. The congregation entered the church during a storm of sleet and rain and came out three hours later to several inches of snow. The stained glass windows are by the famous designer Mr. C. E. Kemp. The font donated by Mr and Mrs James of Ambleside is carved out of black marble and rests on two granite steps.
