The courage, vitality and intensity of this young British quartet’s performances is fast establishing it as one of the most impressive ensembles on the international chamber music scene. Their programme begins with the sun-kissed, stunningly beautiful quartet of Ravel and ends with Mozart’s great ‘Dissonance’ Quartet, so-called because of the intense harmonies in its slow introduction. The last of his quartets dedicated to Haydn, it prompted the old man to tell Mozart’s father that “your son is the greatest composer known to me.” Incredible intensity is the hallmark of Bartók’s Third Quartet, a masterpiece of concision.
