Britain's What's On Event Guide
On Weaving a Basket
A one-day workshop with Lewis Prosser.
About the event:
Join the Association for Time-Travelling Basket-Makers and explore material culture across space and time. By delving into heritage weaving techniques and materials, participants will uncover the cultural and historical legacy of basket making. This workshop combines seminar discussions and practical teaching. Attendees will design and construct a unique vessel for a parallel society, gaining hands-on experience and a holistic understanding of the human impulse to craft things. Themes such as place, identity, utility, and evolving attitudes towards labour will be discussed and put into practice. This pilot workshop for Braziers Park is inspired by writings of Tim Ingold, Ursula LeGuin, and Donna Haraway.
The workshop is not just about creating a basket; it focuses on re-engaging with our shared crafting heritage and understanding basketry’s broader conceptual dimensions.
Perfect for adults interested in an open, fun, and exploratory approach to craft.
About the facilitator:
Lewis Prosser is an absurdist basket-maker based in Penarth, Wales, who blends material culture with performance. His practice emphasises sustainability without compromising material quality, presenting basketry as a methodology for understanding the world around us. In addition to this work as an artist, he manages The Turner House Gallery in the Vale of Glamorgan and is a founding member of the Cardiff-based performance collective SCORE.
