Martlesham Heath Remembrance Service
Martlesham Heath ‘Service of Remembrance’ Sunday 10th November starting at 2.15pm organised by The Martlesham Heath Aviation Society on the Barrack Square Martlesham Heath, IP5 3RF (just past the entrance to BT Adastral Park).
Everyone is welcome to attend the Service remembering all those who died in all wars for our freedom.
For the first time ever, the music will be played by the ‘United States Air Force Europe ‘Ramstein’ Marching Band’, who have flown in from their base in Ramstein, Germany.
We ask that everyone is on the Barrack Square, Martlesham Heath IP5 3RF by 2:15 p.m. to appreciate and welcome the USAF (Europe) Marching Band as they march in and take up position ready for the Service to start.
Why the USAFE band?
The 356th Fighter Group (FG) Memorial on the Barrack Square Martlesham Heath was the first memorial raised to the American dead after the end of WW2 and has the names and rank of the 72 killed while stationed at RAF Martlesham Heath. There was another service man killed but it was too late for his name to be included.
The Memorial was the idea of Captain Eric Harvey and his wife. They opened their house in Little Bealings as a hospital for injured USAAF personnel from the 356th FG.
Captain Harvey logged details of all 72 deaths and after the end of WW2 started a collection in the local area in order to raise a lasting Memorial. Collecting no more than 6d from each house, he quickly raised enough for the Memorial which was dedicated in June 1946.
FREE ADMISSION - Please just turn up well before 2:15 pm, and do not park in the Road behind the Memorials on The Barrack Square.
