The Open University Choir with the Cantoribus Ensemble, conducted by Bill Strang, will give a choral orchestral concert of music by W.A. Mozart, J.S. Bach, Monteverdi, and the lesser known Rathgeber.
Mozart’s Mass in D Major K194 joyously displays his relaxed use of traditional techniques of sacred music alongside the eighteenth century preference for charm and elegance.
Bach's motets are recognised as pinnacles of the choral repertoire. No 6 'Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden' may be the shortest, but it is nevertheless extremely concentrated.
Monteverdi's 'Beatus vir' is his best-known work. Though undated, it presents as a mature piece which expands the dramatic preoccupations of his madrigals.
A contemporary of Bach, and apparently more popular at the time, Valentin Rathgeber is little-known today. The Choir will perform one of his several settings of the 'Alma Redemptoris mater' in a transcription by conductor Bill Strang.
The concert will also include pieces for small orchestra and organ and will last for just over an hour.
