Women in Song - songs written for, by and about women
HANNA HIPP, mezzo. EMMA ABBATE, piano
Friday 21 March 2025 7.30pm
Clara Schumann: Six Songs, op.13; Robert Schumann: Frauenliebe und Leben, op.42; Pauline Viardot: Hai Luli; Havanaise; Les filles de Cadix; Francis Poulenc: Eight Polish Songs; Amy Beach: Three Browning Songs, op. 44; Madeleine Dring: Take, O take those lips away; It was a lover and his lass.
Polish mezzo Hanna Hipp is in great demand at major opera companies, including Glyndebourne, The Royal Opera, Garsington, Scottish Opera, the Royal Danish Opera (where she recently had a great success as Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale) and many others world-wide. She also has a busy concert career both in recital and with orchestra. Here, partnered by Italian pianist Emma Abbate, she explores women in song, with Robert Schumann’s great Frauenliebe und Leben songs at the centre. The brilliantly talented Clara Schumann was known as a concert pianist in her lifetime but, as her own songs demonstrate, she was also a very fine composer.
