Israel in Egypt

Chelmsford Singers and Felsted Choral Society are pleased to announce their joint performance of George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt in Thaxted Church, Watling St, Thaxted CM6 2PE at 7pm on Saturday 5th April, 2025.

Tickets are £20, with under 18s free. Refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from ticketsource.co.uk/felstedchoralsociety.

Ably conducted by Thomas Duchan with Chelmsford Singers’ conductor James Davy accompanying on the organ, and supported by full orchestra and dazzling soloists, this performance promises to be tuneful, dramatic, and moving in turn.

Israel in Egypt, HWV 54, is a biblical oratorio in which there is a strong emphasis on the choral elements. The libretto is believed to have been prepared by Charles Jennens, who also compiled the libretto for the Messiah. The work is comprised entirely of selected passages from the Old Testament. In Part 1, Moses leads his people away from Egypt and parts the Red Sea. In Part 2, the Israelites celebrate their deliverance in a series of joyful choruses.

Soloists will be Jessica Edom-Carey (soprano), Tarryn Surratt (mezzo soprano), Adam West (tenor), with Theo Perry and Peter Norris singing bass duet.

James Davy has been director of The Chelmsford Singers since 2012 when he was appointed Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral and is currently pursuing a freelance career as an organist and conductor across East Anglia.

A former associate lecturer at the University of Chichester, Thomas Duchan is musical director of Witham Singers, The Hedingham Singers and Felsted Choral Society and is also a freelance music copyist.

The Chelmsford Singers have been engaged in quality music making since 1927. The Felsted Choral Society recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
