Bex Burch with Laurel Pardue: There is Only Love and Fear
Bex Burch will be joined by Laurel Pardue to perform a programme drawing on Bex Burch's new album, There is Only Love and Fear.
Bex Burch is a composer, percussionist, producer and improviser who emphasizes space, repetition and aspects of chaos. These themes characterize a continuous approach that she refers to as “messy minimalism.” She runs the label and post-punk band Vula Viel and has worked with influential artists such as Peter Zummo, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney and Macie Stewart. Bex completed an 18-month instrument making apprenticeship in Ghana with Gyil master Thomas Sekgura, a formative experience that gave her a deep-seated respect for the music of the Dagaare and gave her the confidence to pursue a path that would express her own voice reflects. A restless, inquiring spirit has shaped her career since, from open-hearted collaboration on her musical releases to the creation of a new xylophone, which she handcrafted and tuned its overtones to maximize the resonances she wanted to hear.
