Both halves of the 20th Century are covered in this unusual programme. Hungarian Béla Bartók was one of a handful of early 20-century composers who recognised how indigenous folk music could fuel a new sort of progressive concert music. His Sonata for two Pianos and Percussion, written in 1937, is a work of intriguing sonority that straddles the boundaries of both chamber- and orchestral-music. American Steve Reich says of his 2013 composition, Quartet for two pianos and two vibraphones, that it ‘demands a high level of ensemble virtuosity and is one of the most complex I have composed.’
Clare Toomer and Paul Turner are the pianists, whilst Sacha Johnson and Alastair Marshallsay manage the whole percussion section, including vibraphones and timpani.
