About this Event
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell
Robert Tressell’s novel follows the fortunes of a group of painters and decorators and their families as they struggle to survive against exploitative employers, unemployment, debt and abject poverty. Where the only safety nets are charity, the workhouse, and the grave. George Orwell called it, ‘a wonderful book’, and considered it a novel everyone should read. This adaptation honours the original novel, and features actors who were in previous productions and the original tour to Hastings, where they performed for The Robert Tressell Society to great acclaim from enthusiastic audiences and critics alike.
