Journeys in Love and Harmony
Wooburn Singers directed by Jonathon Cole-Swinard with the Piatti Quartet
Gerald Finzi wrote his Seven Poems of Robert Bridges whilst courting Joy Black. Eric Whitacre set poems written by his partner Hila Plitmann in the Five Hebrew Love Songs to capture special moments in their relationship. Alexander Borodin dedicated his String Quartet No. 2 to his wife, who inspired its creation. Drawing together these intimate glimpses of composers’ romantic lives, Toby Young’s stunning setting of William Blake’s poem, Love and Harmony closes the concert.
Founded by Richard Hickox in 1967 and now directed by Jonathon Cole-Swinard (Garsington Opera’s Head of Music), the Wooburn Singers are a group of excellent amateur singers, deeply rooted in the local community. They are joined for this sumptuous programme by the outstanding Piatti String Quartet, lauded by The Strad for their ‘profound music making’.
