About this Event

Talk: Dunstable's Medieval Past

Join local author and historian John Buckledee for an illustrated talk on the medieval tournaments that once made Dunstable famous!

During the medieval era, Dunstable was one of England’s four main centres for knights' tournaments. These were mock battles featuring hundreds of armoured horsemen. These contests spanned many acres, likely on the lower slopes of the Downs.

John is hosting two talks; one for adults, and one for families.

Adults can discover the fascinating history of these tournaments, the notable knights who took part, and rare surviving manuscripts that shed light on this thrilling chapter of Dunstable’s past.

Families can join an engaging session featuring storytelling and illustrations by Robin Davies, giving younger audiences a glimpse into the world of medieval knights.
