About this Event
CANVAS: a community arts festival at Wellington Place
CANVAS is a month-long celebration of art and community, taking place at Wellington Place from the 10th April - 6th May, 2025. The event will be presented in partnership with Leeds Arts University, showcasing student’s work and highlighting the importance of art and creativity as both a form of expression, and a legitimate career path.
Collaborative Canvas: A large-scale ‘paint by numbers’ designed by one of Leeds Arts University's students. The public can make their mark on the canvas during the Easter holidays, resulting in a large scale community art piece which will also be printed onto postcard keepsakes.
Children’s Activities Sat 12/Sun 13 April & Sat 19/Sun 20 April 10-2pm.
Local providers, The Play Tent, will take over with a free open-ended play and craft space for children aged 0+. The space will create an imaginative space for children to explore their creativity.
Art in the City Fri 2 May 11-6pm & Sat 3 May 10-5pm: Celebrating local talent, WP will host a large art market in Tower Square, featuring up to 30 stalls to browse. Alongside local artists, Wellington Place will fund pitches for Leeds Arts University students. This initiative aims to help students turn their creative practice into a commercial venture.
The Art Trail: featuring a collection of work previously featured as part of the Wellington Place Artist’s Window series. Members of the public will be able to get a map from any of WP's onsite restaurants, cafes and bars and explore the work on display in each of the windows.
Interactive Sketch Club 26 April & 3 May 12-2pm: To support the Art Trail and further encourage audience participation, a local artist will deliver an interactive sketch club session, during which members of the public will have the opportunity to explore the student’s work and respond to each piece through their own practice using pens, paper and pencils provided.
