Newcastle upon Tyne Bach Choir
Newcastle Baroque
Mhairi Lawson (soprano)
Eric Cross (conductor)
Our summer concert is the last in this year’s celebrating Eric Cross’s 40th anniversary as the choir's musical director. Our June concert has a more personal slant, comprising works by two composers who have been central to Eric’s musical interests: Handel is represented here by his four famous Coronation Anthems, written for the crowning of King George II at Westminster Abbey in 1727. They include the famous Zadok the Priest, which has been sung at every subsequent British coronation.
Eric’s doctoral dissertation was on Vivaldi’s operas and our concert will include some of Vivaldi’s operatic arias, for which we are delighted to welcome back soprano and Vivaldi specialist Mhairi Lawson.
The final piece in our programme also represents the importance to the choir of promoting lesser known music. Jan Dismas Zelenka, an exact contemporary of Handel and Vivaldi, was until recently largely neglected. His Miserere in C minor was the first work by this composer that the choir performed back in 2013. Its highly original opening movement with dramatic dotted rhythms in the orchestra shows why he was so highly regarded in his day.
