Birmingham care home invites community to honour VE Day

Care UK’s Metchley Manor, on Church Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their very own 1940s-themed street parties.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

The event at Metchley Manor will be taking place on Wednesday 7th May, from 2pm-4pm

Metchley Manor resident, Margaret Doano, added: “VE Day holds a special place in my heart. It’s a reminder of the strength and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom. On these days where we gather and remember, I feel proud to have lived through such a pivotal moment in history. It’s an honour to be surrounded by friends and share these memories. The spirit here at Metchley Manor is vibrant, and events like these always bring energy and joy to the home. My parents always emphasised the importance of community, and I see that same dedication reflected in our gatherings.”

Kim-Marie Newton, General Manager at Metchley Manor, said: “We’re passionate about building and maintaining relationships within our community here at Metchley Manor, so we’re pleased to be opening our doors to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day for a special day of sharing memories.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, especially those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and it’s been inspiring to hear everyone’s experiences and memories from wartime Britain.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence, Metchley Manor offers full-time residential and dementia care in luxury surroundings, as well as short-term respite care. The home offers an array of enrichin
